JESSICA D'ENTREMONT
Jessica is a senior at University of Massachusetts Amherst studying philosophy and political science.
After studying the issue of incarceration and the harmful effects it has had on children and families, I sought to alleviate this timely issue through a Capstone Project at UMass. Incarceration rates are not decreasing, but rather have been steadily rising over recent years. When tackling this issue, I aimed to find ways to improve and facilitate the experience of children with an incarcerated parent. Research has shown the benefits of family-focused programs in prison that can help to preserve and strengthen family ties during incarceration. In order to study the effectiveness of parenting programs, I have been observing parenting classes at the Hampshire County Jail. Communicating with the inmates and listening to their insights have been providing me the information needed to determine its effectiveness. However, in my pursuit of this Capstone project, I have struggled to incorporate my own experience into my research. A huge part of my passion for this topic evolves from my own personal experience. Over the past few years, I have struggled with the effects of having an incarcerated parent. In this project, I would like to present my own experience alongside the research I have collected for my Honors Capstone in an artistic way.
